George Anderson, EQ Pioneer

Born in 1938 in Jackson, MS, George’s life and career path is a story that should be told. At the age of 20, George moved to Los Angeles where he completed his undergraduate degree at Cal State LA. He became a probation officer at Camp Kilpatrick, a Juvenile Detention Center in Malibu, later featured in the major motion picture “The Gridiron Gang”, starring The Rock.

After encouragement from his supervisor, George left to pursue his Master’s in Social Work from the University of California, Los Angeles. He became one of the first Black Americans to receive the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in 1971, which paid for any graduate program of his choosing. After a year at UCLA, George sought a more clinical education, and traveled with his young daughter to Smith School of Social Work in Northampton, MA.

After receiving his MSW, George traveled to Boston to pursue post-graduate training at Harvard Medical School and The Judge Baker Child Guidance Center. Here he would be mentored by George Gardener, known for being a member of the party that accompanied Sigmund Freud around Clark University in Atlanta upon his first visit to the U.S. While learning from one of the most highly regarded individuals in the history of psychology, George was also provided with the opportunity to attend lectures on Childhood and Adolescence from Anna Freud.
